Is Chocolate Healthy for Athletes?

Chocolate is more than just a sweet treat! For athletes, including cheerleaders, chocolate can fit into a balanced diet and provide a little enjoyment alongside the hard work of training and competing.

Dark chocolate contains antioxidants called flavonoids, which may support heart health. Chocolate also contains polyphenols, which may help heart health. A study published in MDPI December 2024, found the combination of endurance training and dark chocolate intake may have a long-term positive impact on overall cardiovascular health. The study involved male runners and two weeks of eating dark chocolate every day.  (If you want to get all sciencey here is the study :https://www.mdpi.com/2075-4663/12/12/344)

While dark chocolate may offer significant health benefits, it is important to recognize that chocolate is high in calories and the key to enjoying this healthy treat is seeing it as a treat and not a meal. Chocolate isn't a substitute for good nutrition.

Athletes don't have to give up chocolate to perform their best! The key is balance. Nutritious meals, enough fluids, adequate sleep, and consistent training matter much more than any single food.

So, after a long cheer practice or a chilly competition, a warm cup of hot chocolate can be a delicious way to relax and enjoy a little treat.

Cheer moms and dad can also enjoy some hot chocolate. We recommend they drink it in our ceramic mug. They can enjoy  chocolate, coffee or tea and celebrate their pride at the same time.
